Emoji
Emoji
docu.nexus has three kinds of emoji, and they share one picker and one search box:
- Standard emoji: the full Unicode set, with the shortcodes you may know from other chat tools, such as
:tada:and:+1:. They are built in, so they work on an instance with no internet access. - docu.nexus icons: every icon in the page and space icon pack is also an emoji under its own name, such as
:saturn:or:solar-system:. - Custom emoji: images that people on your instance upload.
Custom emoji belong to the whole instance. Anyone who can sign in can add one, unless an instance administrator has set Who may add custom emoji in Admin -> Chat to administrators only, and everyone can use every one.
Adding a custom emoji
- Click your avatar, at the top of the rail down the right edge, and pick My preferences.
- Open the Emoji tab.
- Under Add an emoji, choose an Image. The Name fills in from the image’s file name, so
party parrot.gifbecomesparty-parrot; change it if you want a different one. Then click Add emoji.
The new emoji appears in the list straight away, and people use it by typing :name:.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Image | PNG, GIF or WebP, at most 256 KB. Animated GIF and WebP stay animated. |
| Size on screen | Never more than 32 pixels, whatever size the image is. A square image looks best. |
| Name | 2 to 32 characters: lower-case letters, digits, _, + and -. Capitals are lowered and surrounding colons are dropped, so  becomes party. |
| Unique | No two custom emoji share a name, across the whole instance. |
| Reserved | A name cannot be a standard emoji shortcode (smile, tada) or a docu.nexus icon name (saturn, comet). |
When a name is refused, the reason appears at the top of the screen and your entry stays in the form, so you can change it and try again.
Removing a custom emoji
The Emoji tab lists every custom emoji on the instance, with the person who added it. A delete button appears beside the ones you may remove:
- Your own: the person who added an emoji can delete it.
- Anyone’s: an instance administrator can delete any custom emoji, including one whose creator’s account has been removed.
An instance administrator can also delete any custom emoji from Admin -> Chat, where every one is listed with who added it.
docu.nexus asks before deleting. Once an emoji is gone, every message and reaction that used it shows its name as text, for example :party_parrot:. Nothing else changes, and if somebody later adds an emoji with the same name, those places show the new image.
When an instance administrator deletes somebody else’s emoji, the audit log records it as Chat → Emoji Deleted, under the entity type Emoji, with the emoji’s name and who added it. It is an instance entry rather than a nexus one, so choose Instance in the log’s Nexus filter to find it. Deleting your own emoji is not recorded.
