Your Account Settings

Every account has these, admin or not. They are separate from the Admin panel and affect only you.

Click your avatar, at the top of the rail down the right edge. Pick My profile or My preferences. Both open the same Preferences panel, on different tabs: Profile, Appearance, Security, Emoji.

The avatar menu also has a Look submenu and a Theme submenu, for switching either without opening the panel.

Profile

SettingNotes
AvatarUpload Photo takes any image and saves it immediately. Remove clears it and saves immediately. With no photo, the browser falls back to the Gravatar registered against your email address, and to your initial when there is none. An administrator can turn the Gravatar lookup off for the whole instance under Admin, then Appearance, and then no photo means your initial.
Display NameRequired. Shown on pages, comments, and member lists.
EmailRead only. It cannot be changed from here.

Click Save Changes after editing the display name. The avatar does not need it.

Appearance

Every option on this tab saves the moment you change it and syncs to your account, so it follows you to other browsers.

Look

A look is a named pairing of one light palette and one dark one. Standard is the familiar palette, in Light and Dark. Walnut pairs Daydream, a warm white page with deep red type, with Memory, a deep umber page, nearly black, with warm white type.

The first row, Same as this instance, follows whatever look your administrator has set as the default, and names it. Pick any other row and that look is yours on every browser you sign in to, whatever the default becomes. A check appears beside the row you picked.

Try shows a look in this window only, without saving anything, so you can walk around the app in it first. A bar at the foot of the window says what you are trying and offers three things:

  • A switch between the look’s two halves, so you can see both without changing your Theme.
  • Use it, which saves the look as yours.
  • Go back, which returns to the look you had.

A try lasts while you move around the app and ends when you reload the page.

Whatever look you use, a page prints in Standard’s light half, so it reads on white paper.

Theme

Light, Dark, or System. System follows your operating system’s preference and switches live. The previews show the two halves of the look you are using, so with Walnut, Light shows Daydream and Dark shows Memory.

Icons

Custom icons shows each item’s own icon (an emoji or one from an icon pack). Standard icons shows a uniform document-type icon everywhere instead, for a quieter tree.

Show navigation shortcut when sidebar is collapsed. Off by default. Turn it on to keep a navigation affordance visible with the sidebar collapsed.

Show visited link color. Off by default, which makes visited and unvisited links look identical. That is the recommendation for navigation-heavy documentation. Turn it on if you want visited links to stand out.

Inline comment highlights

Controls how inline comment highlights render in documents you read.

SettingNotes
Show inline comment highlights on all pagesOn by default. Off hides every inline highlight for you.
Highlight colourYellow, Blue, Green, Magenta, or Purple. Applies to highlights you create.
Highlight aging period1 to 365 days, default 30. Older highlights fade toward transparent over this period, so recent discussion stands out. Commits on blur or Enter.
Preview agingA slider that simulates a given age. Navigate to a real page to see the effect. The preview resets when you leave the panel.

Security

Change Password

Current password, new password, confirm. Minimum 8 characters. Eye icons reveal what you typed.

Changing your password signs out every other session on your account. Your current session survives.

Active Sessions

One row per signed-in device: browser string, IP address, and last active time. The top entry is tagged Current. Click Revoke on any other to sign that device out immediately.

Two-Factor Authentication

TOTP, using any authenticator app.

  • Enable 2FA walks you through scanning a code and confirming, then hands you a set of backup codes.
  • Once on, the card shows how many unused backup codes remain.
  • Regenerate backup codes asks for a current 6-digit code, then issues a fresh set and invalidates the old one. You can Copy all or Download .txt before closing.
  • Disable 2FA asks for either a current 6-digit code or your account password. All backup codes are invalidated.

Emoji

Lists every custom emoji on the instance, with who added it, and has the form for adding one. Anyone can add an emoji, unless the instance keeps that to administrators (then the form is not shown); you can delete your own, and an instance administrator can delete any. See Emoji for the naming rules and what happens to messages when an emoji is removed.
