Spaces and Pages
Page Properties
Page Properties
Properties are free-form key-value metadata attached to a page or a space. Use them for things that do not belong in the body: an owner, a status, a review date, a ticket reference.
Two places properties appear
Properties can be shown as a block you place in the page, or by the panel at the foot of the page. They are the same properties either way; only the presentation differs.
| Properties block | Properties panel | |
|---|---|---|
| How it gets there | You insert it: type /properties in edit mode | Automatic, on any page that has properties |
| Where it sits | Wherever you put it in the document | Below the body, under Tasks and above Backlinks |
| Configurable | Heading, borders, density, which keys to show | No |
| Exports | Yes, as a table | No |
A page that has a block does not also show the panel. The panel is the fallback for pages that have not placed one, so properties are never listed twice.
Spaces have the panel only: it sits at the top of the space page, above the folder and page listing.
Click the panel header to expand or collapse it. The header shows a database icon, the word Properties, and a count badge.
Add a property
From a properties block, or from an expanded panel, click Add property. Two fields appear:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Property key | Must start with a letter. Letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens only. Max 100 characters. Unique per page or space. |
| Value (string or JSON) | Anything. |
Click Add, or Cancel to back out.
Property values
There are no property types, no dropdown, and no date pickers. Every value is typed as text and interpreted once: if it parses as JSON, it is stored as that JSON value, otherwise it is stored as a string.
| You type | Stored as |
|---|---|
In review | string |
42 | number |
true | boolean |
["security", "api"] | array |
{"owner": "dana"} | object |
Values display as plain text. Non-string values are rendered as compact JSON.
Configure a properties block
Hover the block in edit mode and click the gear to open its settings. Four things, and nothing that changes the properties themselves:
| Setting | Options | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heading | Any text, or empty | Empty removes the heading entirely |
| Border | none, rows, boxed | rows is the default and matches the panel |
| Density | comfortable, compact | Compact tightens the rows and narrows the key column |
| Show | One toggle per property | Which keys this block lists. All of them by default |
Show filters the block, it does not delete anything: a key you switch off still exists on the page and still appears in the panel on a page that has no block. Add a property while a filter is on and the filter widens to include it, so what you just typed does not vanish.
The trash icon beside the gear removes the block from the page. The properties survive it.
Edit and delete
Hover a property row to reveal two icon buttons.
Edit turns the value into a text area. ⌘ Enter saves, Escape cancels, or use the Save and Cancel buttons.
Delete asks for confirmation with Delete Property and the message Delete property "key"?. Confirm with Delete.
Space properties
Spaces have their own property set, edited through the identical panel on the space page.
Space properties and page properties are completely independent. A page does not inherit its space’s properties, and nothing merges the two sets. Treat space properties as metadata about the space itself.
What properties do not do
Set expectations before you invest in a taxonomy:
- Properties are not searchable. Search covers page titles and body text only.
- You cannot filter, sort, or group any list by property.
- There is no properties report: nothing aggregates properties across pages, and you cannot list “every page where status is Draft”.
- Any member of the Nexus can read, add, edit, and delete properties. Space and page permissions are not consulted.
- Properties are sorted alphabetically by key. A newly added key may appear at the bottom until the list refreshes.
- Deleting a page or space deletes its properties with it.
